Here are our steps to adopt.
View our adoptable dogs online or come in during public hours: Wednesdays, 5-7 pm, and Saturdays, 9-11 am (or limited by-appointment). Many of our dogs are in foster care so contact prior to stopping in is recommended!
If interested in a particular dog, we encourage you to fill out an application before visiting. Filling out an application does not commit you to taking the dog nor does it guarantee an adoption will follow. It simply allows us to start the dialog as to whether the dog and your living situation are a good match. You may obtain an application from the shelter or download and print it from the website at hoodriveradoptadog.org and then scan/email, fax, or drop off. The contact info is on the application.
References are checked. If we have an application ahead of time and are able to precheck the references, the dog may be able to go home at the end of the adoption day’s “meet and greets” with the potential adopter — if the full process has been completed. If we are unable to contact references, there is a 24 hour wait or the dog may be adopted to somebody else who more fully completed the process by adoption day.
If you have expressed an interest in adopting a particular dog, we will forward your information to that dog’s assigned Adoption Counselor (AC). All our ACs are volunteers, but generally you can expect a call back within 24 hours. The AC will apprise you of the dog’s status, discuss how the dog might fit into your household and when you might be able to come in for a meet and greet.
It is REQUIRED that ALL people and dogs with whom the adoptable dog will reside do a meet and greet. The meet and greet is for the dog’s benefit as well the family’s. We need to see that the dog is comfortable and appropriate with and for all individuals in the family, for the best possible outcome.
– For all dogs we take all applications leading up to and during the next adoption day. On occasion we have a high-demand dog that has many suitors. When we have multiple applicants, 30 minutes before end of shift we’ll choose the best match for the dog from those who have completed ALL the preliminary steps (filled out an application, done a full meet and greet and had references checked).
– Factors such as hours alone, methods of confinement, experience and needs of the particular dog – exercise, medical, and behavioral – are all considered for placement.
The adoption counselor will go over all information in the dog’s adoption packet, and the contract is signed.
We take an adoption photo, which, with the adopters’ permission, we post to our Facebook page.
